SLA Junior Seminar 2-12: Hamlet

 When a ghostly figure appears to Prince Hamlet, he discovers the dreadful truth about his father's death. 

     Hamlet of Shakespear is a classical representative work. Prince Hamlet is a fictional character in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. He is the Prince of Denmark, son of the previous King of Denmark. Hamlet doesn't trust the new King as he meets the Ghost of his father who was poisoned by King Claudius. His father wants Hamlet to be brave and kill the King for him. In terms of that, Hamlet makes up his mind to kill his uncle. Since Hamlet worries that they may kill him so he pretends to be crazy while revenging the killing of the King. Can Hamlet succeed in revenging?

 

SLA Junior Seminar 2-11: Nicholas Nickleby

 After his father's death, Nicholas has no money, no job and a family to support. 

    

     Nicholas Nickleby, an 18-year-old son, is left to take care of his mother and his sister Kate after his father's death. His father left them no money so Nicholas sought help from his uncle Ralph, a cold-hearted moneylender. Nicholas was sent away to Dotheboys Hall to teach. However, his heart was filled with pity for children who suffered cruel treatment by evil Squeers. Then Nicholas made a decision to leave the school immediately with Smike who become his close companion. Nicholas did not know how to come back to London. Meanwhile, he only had a little money. Can Nicholas find a new job in London, or will he become happy with his family?

        In the final class, we did a quick review of what we have learned in the last half semester. Then we were divided into several groups to discuss which was the most impressive section for each other. Actually I have got interested in the last section which was about CALL. Blog is familiar to most English major students at PUK. Blog can be informative, personal or academic. It is a good way to get much better at writing in English. Through blogging, we could practice using words and grammar properly. Furthermore, it allows us to blowers other's blogs to learn new vocabulary or ideas. Therefore, a blog is a place to practice your written English so we should work on it continuously.

        Today's class was about one of the methods of teaching which was CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). In the early days, the computer plays the role of tutor so that students can study alone. Afterward, computers are regarded as a tool since several softwares are used quite often such as PowerPoint, and Word. There are some more benefits for students to use the computer to study. For instance, they could notice the mistakes by themselves while finding the error from other student's essays. There is another example is that the strategy of teachers how to improve the overall performance. It is different for teachers who need to control the whole class. In terms of that, they let the students who are good at speaking English to assist the teacher. It is a good way to make a group have a presentation. As a result, students could improve their level of English ability in a short-term period. From my point of view, I think these are effective ways to help learners to obtain English skills.
