SLA Junior Seminar 2-10: Who Was Annie Oakley?

Women relied on their men to protect them. But why? asked Annie. She believed women should rely on themselves. (p104)

Annie Oakley was born in a small town in Ohio. When she could hold the hunting rifle, her father started to teach her how to shoot. Since her father's sudden death, her mother was very difficult to support the family. Little Annie knew how hard her mother worked and decided to help her. Then she picked up her father's gun and went out hunting. She brought back many pheasants more than she could carry. Her family had never been hungry again. Annie immediately became the best hunter in the small town. She met Frank Butler who was a sharpshooter and performed a "shooting target" program. They got married and started the performance together in a circus. The couple became more and more famous so they sailed to England for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. They became celebrities but they raised money for soldiers and performed for troops. There is no doubt that Annie was a respectable woman and a sharpshooter at that time.
